The New Standard: Navigating CSA A440.4 Window Installation in Alberta
With Alberta’s adoption of the 2023 National Building Code, CSA guidelines for window installation have changed. Qualistat Building Envelope Consultants have been working closely with these evolving interpretations, helping builders understand how the standard is being applied in the field and where common inspection issues are arising.
Looking ahead to the anticipated adoption of the 2025 National Building Code, CSA A440.4:19 is set to become a long-term requirement in Alberta. At ABEC South on February 25th, Qualistat will present the intent of this standard and outline practical, code-compliant window installation approaches to help designers, builders, and trades confidently meet current and future compliance expectations.

As Manager of the Qualistat team, he is a trusted authority known for guiding complex projects, mentoring professionals, and advancing durable, energy-efficient building practices across the province. A Certified Passive House Consultant through the Passive House Institute, Steve brings advanced expertise in passive design and low-energy construction. He is a founding member and former board chair of Passive House Alberta and also holds Registered Energy Advisor and CHBA NetZero Energy Advisor designations. His combination of technical depth and hands-on field experience makes him a valued resource for builders, homeowners, and industry stakeholders seeking practical, high-performance solutions.
Steve is deeply committed to education and knowledge-sharing. He co-developed curriculum for the Canadian Institute for Energy Training Foundation Level and Energy Advisor courses and has delivered formal Energy Advisor training, including for the Yellowhead Tribal Council. He continues to develop and present building science workshops for builders, community groups, and industry peers.
