SUMMARY:ABEC South April 2026 - Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesign of Adhered Masonry Veneers for Multi-Storey Buildings \n  \nAdhered masonry veneers have become a popular cladding option in Alberta in the last few years\, especially in commercial and multi-family residential buildings that are often multi-storey. As a result\, the use of adhered masonry veneers in multi-storey applications and over exterior insulation has increased significantly. Shear and Tensile bond testing of various bonding mortar and adhered stone combinations was commissioned by the Alberta Masonry Council and has led to recommendations for the design of adhered masonry veneers on multi-storey buildings and over exterior insulation. The presentation is intended to share these considerations with designers for safer installations of adhered masonry veneers specifically over 3 m in height and or over exterior insulation greater than 38 mm in depth. \n  \nPresenter bio: \nDr. Hagel Holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science and Applied Mathematics\, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering\, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering all from the University of Calgary. Prior to employment with the Alberta Masonry Council\, Mark worked for the Canadian Concrete Masonry Producers Association. He then moved on to the role of a Building Envelope Engineer and Structural Engineer with the Calgary office of Halcrow Yolles. Mark’s thesis dissertation\, “Service Life Prediction of Connectors in Masonry Veneer Wall Systems”\, was heavily rooted in building science\, structural engineering\, and the durability of building components. In 2018 Mark served on the National Research Council of Canada’s (NRC) working group that developed the Guideline on Design for Durability of the Building Envelope. Mark has also taught first year and graduate engineering courses as a sessional professor at the University of Calgary. “"\n\n\n\n"”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Construction Adjudication and How it Applies to Building Envelope Projects Prompt Payment AND Construction Adjudication.\n\n\nPrompt Payment has been in force for some time now with a fair bit of discussion surrounding the Prompt Payment portion. However\, how many of us know about Prompt Payment but don’t know much about the Construction Adjudication process that is part and parcel with it? As one of only a handful of registered and practicing construction adjudicators in Alberta\, Johnathon Bain\, P.Eng.\, Q.Adj.(Const). has been on the forefront of construction adjudications in Alberta. In this presentation\, Johnathon will speak to:\n\nWhat is construction adjudication and how does it differ from other dispute resolution methods?\nWhat does a construction adjudication process look like?\nWho should consider construction adjudication?\nDiscuss the application of construction adjudication to projects building envelope consultants typically are involved in.\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Johnathon Bain \nFor nearly 20 years\, Johnathon has practiced Building Science and construction across Western Canada. With experience in evaluation\, restoration\, and maintenance of existing buildings\, he is a published technical author\, technical presenter\, and one of 15 Construction Adjudicators in Alberta. His deep building science technical knowledge has led to appoints on the IIBEC Interface technical journal Peer Review Board and the Task Group on Environmental Separation Reference Documents of the National Model Code Committee\, who are preparing the next iteration of the National Building Code of Canada\nJohnathon also serves as a technical advisor for the SAIT Green Buildings Technology Lab. His volunteer activity includes being a Past Chair for the APEGA Calgary Branch Board and the IIBEC CPC Industry Advocacy Committee. He has further been recognized as an expert in building science and roofing by the Alberta Court of Kings Bench.\n\n\n“"\n\n\n\n"”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:ABEC South January 2026 - Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nBird-Friendly Glass Solutions\nArchitecture tells us a great deal about society. In fact\, glass and glazing are used to blur the lines between inside and out\, helping elevate performance and the experiences of people. Yet while humans can use environmental cues to identify glass as a barrier\, there is growing realization that birds cannot. The solution is bird-friendly glass that delivers on performance\, energy efficiency and the needs of people. This presentation provides a better understanding of how to recognize issues affecting the bird population while learning about best practices and design fundamentals for smarter\, safer buildings. \n \n  \nGeoff Shellard \nRegional Architectural Design Manager for Guardian Glass in central and western North America. \nHe’s been in the glass industry for over ten years working architects\, fabricators\, glaziers and developers. Geoff is based out of Vancouver\, BC and is also on the Board of Directors for Fenestration Canada. “"\n\n\n\n'”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
