Topic: Crystalline Integral Concrete Waterproofing System
By keeping the water out of the of the concrete, you will also keep out deleterious compounds that can cause corrosion of the reinforcing steel. The American Concrete Institute has undergone a 15 year process that will change the way you talk about and work with concrete. Waterproofing systems have now been classified into two new categories: use with hydrostatic pressure (PRAH) and use with non-hydrostatic conditions (PRAN). The session will begin with a brief introduction to crystalline technology and will delve into the new categories and how this changes the way you design, specify and approach your project. We will then review recent BCIT performance testing of the crystalline admixtures. This information is aimed at clarifying the 4 items critical to designing watertight concrete
- Chemical difference
- Reduction of shrinkage cracks
- Self-sealing of cracks
- Reduction of permeability
The presentation will conclude with a means and methods approach to waterproofing Vancouver’s 7 level below grade TELUS Gardens parking garage. We will review the initial questions we ask to troubleshoot projects and take you from the first concrete pour, through each appropriate system hitting joints, penetrations and cracks to ensure the structure is watertight and leak free. We’ll then finish with a Q&A period. The presentation will focus on below grade concrete application but the same systems are used to protect water containment and above grade concrete.
Presenter: John Andersen
