Topic: Net Zero at University of Calgary – MacKimmie Tower Retrofit Case Study

The MacKimmie Tower and block redevelopment is one of the most ambitious low-carbon projects in Canada providing more than 40,000 m² of re‐energized space in the heart of the campus. The presentation will highlight the project drivers along with the unique design and construction processes employed in this low carbon deep retrofit project. Additionally, presenters will share a technical review of the active double-skin façade system that will provide an exemplary interior environment and a 90% reduction in energy consumption, compare modelled performance to the Zero Carbon Building standard and discuss challenges of targeting zero carbon in a retrofit application.

Presenter One: John Souleles

Has a wide range of experience in post-secondary institutions. As a project manager and design architect with DIALOG, he is currently working with The University of Calgary on the MacKimmie Complex project; a new standalone facility and existing building retrofit, which is set to accommodate academic excellence while striving for Net Zero Carbon. John understands the importance of carbon neutrality and the integration of these aspirations within the context of buildings campuses, and communities. He also has experience including; libraries, healthcare and recreational facilities. He has undertaken public and institutional library projects with construction values over $90 million in Alberta. As project manager and design architect, John has undertaken more than ten branch modernization projects for the Calgary Public Library, including renovations to the Central Branch. John was also project manager for the new Mount Royal University Riddell Library + Learning Centre, a new standalone facility to accommodate student and faculty academic excellence.

Presenter Two: Adam Stoker (Moderator) 

Has more than 15 years of experience working with energy efficiency and sustainable buildings. His background in mechanical engineering, project management and green design allows him to offer a broad range of knowledge and expertise on sustainable design and energy performance. Adam has worked on over 50 LEED projects across western Canada and has worked directly with designers, contractors, and building operators in all phases of the sustainable building process. In his current role with the University of Calgary, he is focused on the delivery of high performance green buildings and sites, and is part of the team delivering the $280 million MacKimmie Complex Redevelopment Project – one of 16 projects participating in the CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Pilot Program.
