ABEC South – May 2022 Luncheon
May 25 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm MDT
$40.00 – $50.00TOPIC: Four Years with National Energy Code in Alberta: What we learned… What we are still figuring out… and what is the next step
SUMMARY: The presentation will focus on the building envelope side of NECB, the use of energy modeling, and the use of both 2D and 3D thermal modeling.
We will try to shed the light on some of the contradicting aspects of the calculations of building envelope performance according to NECB 2017.
Finally we will discuss the ongoing transition from “reference-based” to “energy intensity-based” energy efficiency regulations and its expected effect of building envelope practice.
Several real-life case studies will be presented trying to identify a set of “rules of thumbs” to be used for early design stages (pre-energy modeling)
SPEAKER: Alaa Kandil, Ph.D., LEED AP Faculty and researcher, South Alberta Institute of Technology
Dr. Kandil holds a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Design from the University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering and a Masters of Engineering. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional since 2009. He has been practicing building energy analysis, internal CFD simulator, lighting design, and LEED consultation for more than ten years. Dr. Kandil’s skills in Building Environmental Controls Systems, especially Energy Modeling using cutting edge technologies such as Energy Plus, CFD analysis and Radiance lighting analysis allowed him to support design teams in different sustainability projects, including a group of LEED projects that he took part in during all stages of design, resulting in energy-efficient facilities that protect the environment and save money on the same time. Dr. Kandil has published a number of research papers in energy modeling, green buildings, and integration between architectural and MEP systems. His recent research areas are sustainable construction and building durability.
